Diabetic Foot Care Tips: Protect Your Feet, Protect Your Health

By Dr. Sk Sabir Rahaman, MBBS, MD (Pharmacology), DFM(Family Medicine), FCFM, CCEBDM, CCLSD

For people living with diabetes, foot care is not optional — it’s essential. High blood sugar can damage nerves and reduce blood flow, increasing the risk of wounds, infections, and even amputations.

Here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to keep your feet healthy.

๐Ÿงผ A. Daily Foot Care Routine

  • Wash feet daily using warm, soapy water (never hot water).

  • Inspect both feet carefully for cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling.

  • Dry thoroughly, especially between toes.

  • Apply a gentle moisturizer to keep skin soft — avoid the spaces between toes.

✂️ B. Toenail Maintenance

  • Keep toenails trimmed straight across to avoid ingrown nails.

  • Use an emery board to smooth sharp edges.

  • If you have poor vision or difficulty trimming, seek help from a podiatrist.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ C. Choosing Proper Footwear

  • Never walk barefoot, even indoors — wear socks and slippers.

  • Choose moisture-wicking socks to keep feet dry.

  • Ensure shoes fit well without pinching or rubbing.

  • Check inside shoes before wearing to remove small stones or debris.

๐Ÿƒ D. Physical Activity

  • Regular exercise boosts circulation in legs and feet.

  • Always wear sturdy, comfortable shoes during activity.

  • Avoid exercising with open wounds on your feet.

๐Ÿค E. Work With Your Diabetes Care Team

  • Keep blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control.

  • Quit smoking to improve circulation.

  • Report numbness, ulcers, or non-healing sores to your healthcare provider immediately.

Bottom Line

Daily foot care prevents infections, ulcers, and serious complications.
Check, protect, and care for your feet — every single day.
